When communicating to students I try to tap into as many learning styles as possible. When I provide direction verbally, I ask for student to paraphrase my instructions to their partners. I try to be as direct as possible and provide step by step instructions. I support my verbal direction with a daily agenda on the whiteboard. Students know that when they walk into class, they can find the objectives for the day on the back whiteboard. Additionally, I keep a 7 day homework schedule on the back whiteboard which helps students (an me) plan ahead.

2. Utilizes a variety of methods to communicate with students Students in my class always know what is due, when it is due and what is coming ahead. I communicate using a variety of methods:

Teacher Blog: Contains two-three posts per week which include updates on assignments as well as homework schedules. This has been used since September.

Edline: I use Edline to communicate homework schedules and assignments to students. I have found Edline most effective when I use the email system to notify students and parents of new information.

Homework Schedules: Students always know what their homework is for each unit of study ahead of time. Occasionally, the homework schedule changes, but I very simply update Edline and my blog to reflect the most up-to-date and accurate information

Homework Opportunity Time: During the second semester I stayed for HOT 1-3 times a week for students. I used this time to communicate with students who have special needs and provide direct communication to reinforce classroom discussion.

As a middle school teacher, I believe that this quote accurately describes how students learn and understand expectations. Students know expectations because of the consistent delivery of expectations. I always write down expectations for students and ensure that they are writing down expectations as we discuss them as a class. Most importantly, I train the students by having them complete sample assignments. By having them model expectations, they consistently achieve more.

2. Provides timely feedback regarding student performance
As a math teacher, I am always giving feedback to my students.

When scoring Problem of the Weeks, I use rubrics to provide feedback which gives direction to the student about how to improve their writings in mathematics.

When reading my student blogs, I provide feedback on their goals through comments.

When students complete a Proof Of Knowledge, I always write them back in order to provide support for their goals.

Additionally, I post progress reports to Edline 1-2 times per month so that students and parents always know where they stand in math class.

1. Communicates clearly assessment criteria to students Students always receive assessment criteria before they begin their study of a new topic. The criteria describes what makes a good or a less good answer.When students were training in problem-solving at the beginning of the year, I gave them anchor papers so that they understood how the rubric was to be applied to student work. Rubrics accompany all projects: Graphic Art, Mandala, You Tubes, Barbie Bungee Jumping. I strongly believe that students deserve to know what is being assessed before I assess it.

2. Monitors individual and class progress As a classroom teacher, I believe that is essential to always know where my students are and where they are going with their math education. For individuals, I post progress reports to Edline several times a month, noticing any sudden changes. I also monitor how classes are performing as a whole. After each exam, I create a Stem and Leaf plot to compare test scores of students. Usually, class averages are within 2% of each other. If there is a wider gap, then I seek to understand why one class may be higher or lower than other classes. 3. Use results of assessments to guide instruction Both formative and summative assessments guide instruction in my class. When students do not meet the standard on a quiz, I go back and reteach concepts they may have missed. The warm ups that start each class are always a result of how students performed on homework assignments, quizzes, and even previous tests. The final exam review at the end of the school year consisted of 30 carefully selected questions based on student performance on summative unit tests.

4. Guides all students in self-assessment Pudong Middle School students participated in Student Led Conferencing in both the fall and the spring. I assisted all of my student in self reflection both as a math teacher and as an advisory teacher. Students wrote their initial reflections and I provided feedback about the depth of their reflections. In her blog, Audrey reflected on the Graphic Art project to demonstrate her self-assessment skills.

Benchmarks that a teacher has successfully met this standard:

1. Utilizes multiple sources of information to assess students' learning As a classroom teacher, I include a variety of sources of information to assess student learning. I have formative assessments in quizzes, Problem of the Weeks, discussions with students during class, individual interviews and group interviews. For summative assessments I use unit tests, final projects as well as Proofs of Knowledge to assess learning.

2. Assesses student using the SAS standards and benchmarks The Standards and Benchmarks are clearly outlined within our curriculum mapping system at SAS. Each unit in my Atlas account reflect what is assessed in a particular unit of study. I use the Standards and Benchmarks to design assessments that will provide me with the best data about student learning.

3. Use appropriate assessment tools I use a variety of assessment tools in my classroom. A typical unit of study includes a pretest, homework assignments, a graphing calculator quiz, a non-graphing calculator quiz, a Home-Timed-Test (this models the testing environment at home where students do not have the use of aids), a Teams, Games, Tournaments (a group assessment where students are motivated to teach each other and fill in any gaps), and a summative unit test.

Several units also included Problem of the Weeks, technology based assessments such as Voicethreads, YouTube video creation, projects, and online learning environments such as Moodle.

4. Use appropriate assessment strategies for ESOL and AS students When appropriate I provide accommodations for ESOL and AS students. When the class is taking a summative assessment, many ESOL and AS students are given the opportunity to have more time and/or take the exam with the ESOL or Academic Support teacher. When we are working on formative assessments in class, some ESOL students opt for an interview instead of a written submission of their Problem of the Weeks.

I use daily homework,quizzes, tests, Problem of the Weeks, Proofs of Knowledge, projects and unit tests to create reports about student learning.

I recorded several of my advisory students as they began presentation to their parents as a way to document their continued learning.
